Dear Friends
of Doe Bay,
Thanks to my involvement in Doe Bay, I recently won an award....
Patriot of the Year! This was given by the Doe
Bay Community Association. I was giving a talk in San Francisco
last week, so I was unable to attend the small ceremony, but it
made me reflect. In my letter of thanks to the Association, I pointed
out the irony that Doe Bay would produce any patriots, as Doe Bay
came of age in the 60's and 70's and, I believe, tried to secede
from the Union over the Vietnam war. Alas, we are not the independent
nation of Doe Bay but rather a small part of the USA; and pleased
to be.
The other thing which occurred to me was that Doe Bay has come
a long way in terms of creating friendships with all of our neighbors.
That is somewhat against the odds. Doe Bay is an unusual neighbor.
We are more active than the dozen or so private homes that could
inhabit our property. We bring people to the island; a place where
many neighbors go to escape. We bring activity where some may seek
only solace. We are, in the final analysis, a business operating
in a place where people don't work but live. So we take this opportunity
to thank our neighbors for being open-minded and welcoming us to
this little paradise on Orcas Island.
Island Stage Left Play the Upper Field Stage at Doe Bay.... Shakespeare
under the Stars
It was a magical night at Doe Bay... again. The
Island Stage Left theatre company staged "As You Like
It" on our outdoor stage. It was a Thursday night
but the crowd of just under 100 was thrilled. My father was
a student of Shakespearean literature, so anything from William
S. holds a special place in my heart. I remembered "All the
world 's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."
But I didn't recall that this play was the source of the phrase
"motley fool". Nor did I recall the quote which I put
at the top of the newsletter which I think applies perfectly well
to Doe Bay. If, like me, you like this place, come waste some time
in it.
We weren't allowed to photograph the performance due to Equity
rules, a lawyer-fostered anachronism, but we can show you these
crowd shots and a photo of one of the props (we promise... no Does
were injured in the production) being passed around during rehearsal.

The Doe Bay Organic Garden and Orchard
....and Education Center
I promise that you won't recognize
the garden. It is bigger and better than ever. Come and see it and
volunteer and enjoy! If you can't figure out why the food in the
cafe tastes so good, go look at the garden!
On Thursday evening, as I watched
the theater group rehearse, I looked over at the garden and saw
a group of our gardeners listening attentively as Joanna, one of
our WWOOFERs gave a presentation on urban gardening. I thought I
must be dreaming because this was what I envisioned for Doe Bay
years ago when I took the big risk of buying it. Creative people,
kind people, talented people... sharing their talents with others
in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
I didn't have much by way of contests in last month's newsletter.
So, there is a photo of our worm composting bin above which I included
in last month's letter. What does it now say on the side of our
high-tech educational bin?
And did I mention that Heather (above center) is a hero and hopefully
will be with us all year... or forever! One last note, Doe Bay being
what it is, notice the words on the white board!

The Doe Bay Fest 09 Lineup
We received over 60 submissions of bands wanting to participate
in Doe Bay Fest 09 on the weekend of Aug. 13th – 16th. It
was an enormously difficult task to eliminate any, as there was
great talent in the pool. We are thrilled to confirm the following:
The Long Winters,
The Maldives, Hey Marseilles, Friday
Mile, David Bazan, Weinland,
The Moon Doggies, Slender
Means, Drew Grow and the Pastors' Wives,
Spanish for 100, The Lonely Forest,
Goldfinch, Tito Ramsey and
more. This is a stellar initial lineup with bands who are some of
the hottest attractions in the Northwest from Fremont and Capital
Hill block parties to Sasquatch and Bumbershoot. If you see these
bands this summer, tell them that you can't wait for Doe Bay Fest
09! (For links to band sites, Join the group Doe
Bay Fest on Facebook!)
Doe Bay Fest Transportation to
the Island - Update Foot Ferry Available direct to Doe Bay
We have chartered a foot ferry directly from Anacortes to the beach
at Doe Bay to bring Friday night guests to the property. It will
leave at about 7:00pm which gives you time to get there and lets
you avoid the well-documented efficiencies of the Government ferry
system. There will be a return boat on Sunday afternoon. The price
for this service is $30 one way and $50 round trip and there are
limited spaces available. Please call the office to reserve your
spot (360) 376-2291. (This is the coolest way to get to Doe Bay
and you can bring all your stuff on board (except for your car)).
Doe Bay Fest 09 Tickets
In order to be anywhere on the property during Doe Bay Fest, you
will have to have a festival ticket and wrist band. Tickets are
available online at brownpapertickets.com
You may purchase now by clicking
on the bird.....
In addition, you may purchase tickets by visiting the front desk
at Doe Bay or by calling the front desk. (360)
376-2291. All tickets are $30.00, but children 12
and under are free. We expect all festival tickets to sell out.
If there are any left the week of the show, they will be $40.00.
Doe Bay Fest 09 Accommodations
- IMPORTANT UPDATE
We are now sold out of all cabins for multi-night
stays. CAMPING is still available!!!
If you need accommodations for Saturday night only, we have approximately
12 nearby offsite cabins sleeping 10 to 15 people each , available
Saturday night along with a free shuttle service. This is a really
cool place to stay on a lake and only minutes away without having
to get behind a wheel.
Doe Bay Fest 09 Food
Most of you know the Doe Bay café serves the most incredible
breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the Northwest. However, with hundreds
of festival goers visiting us that day, we will be setting up several
additional food vending sites in the music area. Our café serves
gourmet organic food, including fresh local seafood. The food provided
in the field will allow for a broader spectrum with several of the
Doe Bay Fest committee members voting for a hot grill with chicken,
bratwursts, and maybe even some sliders. While those animals are not
on my diet, I am not judgmental. We will be working with some of our
friends on the Island to be food purveyors for the weekend and we
promise you that the food will be hot and tasty while you enjoy soft
drinks or beer and wine in our beer garden and the great music.
I wanna go... what do I do? ....
As Michael Jackson said, It's
as easy as 1,2,3!
Amazingly, we get this question daily, so:
Follow these 3 simple steps
to reserve your spot today:
