Moran State Park has some of the finest hiking and biking
trails in the Northwest. Many of them are closed to bikes
during the Summer but, as the State Park web site says:
Certain bike trails are closed seasonally. Eleven

are 25 miles open to bicycle use.

News –
Rosario
We are pleased to give you an update. The auction of Rosario
took place as planned on September 30, 2008. With all the
challenges that the property has endured over the last couple
decades, having a “no reserve call out auction”
on the day after the stock market plummeted 777 points might
seem like more than one could endure.
At 1:45 p.m., only 45 minutes after bidding began, the gavel
came down and Rosario Resort was sold at auction for $5.45
million, plus the 8% buyers' fee.
We at Doe Bay believe this should be a good thing for Rosario
and for Orcas Island. In the short term it will be especially
good for Doe Bay as we anticipate many Rosario guests deciding
to try something new.
We are a different place than Rosario, but for the right
guests, we will fill a need. Ultimately we believe and hope
that Rosario will be back and we look forward to that.
Apparently the buyer has the right attitude. Deborah Hansen,
niece of former owner Sarah Geiser, said the new buyer told
her aunt that he thought of himself as the caretaker of Rosario,
not the owner. He sounds like he is as loony as our owner.

| The
Camp Fire |
|
One of our favorite events at Doe Bay is an evening campfire.
They are great in the Summer but truly memorable in the colder
times of year. We have a safe burn pit designed for fires
for groups of 5 to 25.

| This issue is dedicated
to FOOD at Doe Bay!
In this Issue…
Dear
Friends of Doe Bay,
This
month's newsletter is about food. We are blessed
with the Doe Bay Organic Garden that produces fabulous
vegetables. We then transport that produce approximately 200 yards
to the Doe Bay Café. That is where our culinary
team takes over. The garden is the starting point and then come
the magicians that make our fresh wholesome food into gourmet meals.
Before I get to that, I have a favor to ask of you. As you may know,
we avoid traditional advertising and have tried to grow "organically".
That is difficult, but we believe it will ultimately be more satisfying.
There are a few things that you can do to help.
-
Please forward this newsletter to a friend or if you know someone
who would enjoy Doe Bay, go to our website and add them to our
mailing list. (Secure and never for sale!)
-
Vote for Obama or McCain or Nader, but please vote for Doe
Bay. Consider voting for Doe Bay in any of the "Best of" polls,
such as Vote for Doe Bay as the Best Wedding Venue. (While you
are out there, please consider a vote for Nan Brotherton photography
(full disclosure, Nan is my daughter) www.NanBPhoto.com
and Teens In Public Service as the best charity(founded by my
wife Maureen and daughter, Tia) www.TeensInPublicService.org
-
If you have had a good experience at Doe Bay, please consider
writing an on-line review about Doe Bay! www.Yelp.com
or www.tripadvisor.com or www.travel.yahoo.com.
Thank you and enjoy the rest of the newsletter.

The
Doe Bay Organic Garden |
|
The Doe Bay Organic Garden is a work in progress. Located on the
site of what was once considered one of the finest organic gardens
in the State, we began re-building it about 4 years ago. Many of
our Doe Bay friends worked on the garden but for two full years,
two full seasons, it was Katie’s garden. The picture at left
above shows Katie giving a garden tour to some of our friends from
the Fairhaven College Reunion, Class of 1972 (of course, nobody
really graduated from Fairhaven in the 70’s so it was more
a reunion of people who were generally around at that time.) On
the right is Katie who left Doe Bay after the 2007 season.
The Garden Grows
After the first full season
of production, the garden more than doubled in size and in produce
actually produced. We have now introduced two new programs for people
who would like to work and learn in the garden while they are at
Doe Bay.
WWOOF – USA Doe
Bay is pleased to be the newest WWOOF host site. We will be welcoming
volunteers under the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms USA
program. Our guest volunteers will stay at Doe Bay from three weeks
to three months, receiving room and board in return for work performed
on our gardens and grounds.
In some cases, we hope to allow WWOOF volunteers to experience
the full circle of our Seed to Plate program by working in the Café
serving the food which they helped grow. For more information, see
the WWOOF site at WWOOF
USA Web Site and/or write to me – Joe@DoeBay.com.
The Community Service Learning Program
Doe Bay recently hosted it’s first group under the new CSLP
program. Under this program groups of 5 to 15 people come to Doe
Bay to live learn and work together. This is available to experienced
gardeners or any group who wants to learn about organic gardens
in one of the most beautiful place in the world. Doe Bay Resort
and Retreat offers these groups free or deeply discounted accommodations
as well as access to all the amenities of Doe Bay.
On the weekend of September 12, 13 and 14, a dozen students from
Shoreline Community College arrived and went to work in the Doe
Bay Organic garden. It was judged by all to be a tremendous success.
Please see the Facebook Doe Bay Resort's Service-Learning Program
Group for more information. If you have a group interested in participating
in this unique program, please write an e-mail to me: Joe@DoeBay.com.

The
Chefs |
|
The food is so good at the Doe Bay café because Doe Bay
is a place that can attract chefs who would be in the first circle
of their profession in Seattle, New York or anywhere. We have walked
down many roads developing the café and we thank and honor
everyone who has cooked in our kitchen.
From our neighbor and friend Raenya and the Island Girls who showed
us what the café might be back in the Winter of 2004 to John
Berry and Rosedanie Cadet and Marissa Kanters, there have been many
great meals served at Doe Bay.
2008 was a watershed year for the
Doe Bay Café.
There are three people who are responsible for the great food of
2008;
Janay Destello, Ande Janousek and Abigael
Birrell.
Janay Destello
We can’t say enough about Janay. Customers raved
all season about her meals... Janay was our head chef this season,
having joined us from the kitchen at Carmelita’s in Seattle.
Our favorite part of her background was that she arrived on Orcas
Island several years ago and spent a summer as an intern in our
kitchen. She came back a few years later and ran the place!
Janay grew up helping her Norwegian mother cook amazing meals.
Her mother taught her that good food comes from love, and love can
sometimes come from good food and she also shared a couple recipes!
Her mother visited Doe Bay this year and tasted her own recipe for
Halibut which was a staple on the menu at the DB Café.
Chef Janay graduated with honors from South Seattle
Community College's renowned Culinary Arts program. She is nationally
accredited with the American Culinary
Federation, ServSafe
certified and a trained nutritionist. So, whether you're in the
mood for some haute cuisine with complex characteristics, or a down-home
meal like mom used to make, Janay delivers! We mean that literally.
If you are craving another of Janay’s meals, she will be catering
this Fall in the Seattle area. www.hautefoodie.com
Janay has worked in some of Washington's best restaurants including
Cafe Flora, Carmelita, Endolyne Joe's and at the Doe Bay Café
here on Orcas Island. In her spare time, Janay loves eating great
food (honestly), traveling abroad and tasting the foods of the world
with her partner of over 6 years, Rebecca. She also loves walking
her pug/poodle mix dog, Bella, through Washington's beautiful outdoors
and foraging for the delicious foods that Mother Nature has provided
us.
Ande Janousek
Cooking this month at the Doe Bay Café is Ande Janousek.
Ande is the former Executive Chef to Carmelita, a fine dining vegetarian
restaurant in Seattle. She's passionate about developing relationships
with the local farmers and showcasing their produce on her menu.
She has the distinct honor of having taught and mentored the two
other chefs featured in this newsletter. My personal story about
Ande: I don’t like pie and don’t like rhubarb, so what
better way to test this chef who is a world class baker as well?
I ordered rhubarb pie. You know the end of the story. I am seriously
considering giving up chocolate.
Abigael Birrell will be
back at Doe Bay leading our kitchen on November 1st. She is currently
cooking her way around the San Juan Islands on a vessel. We look
forward to welcoming her back to land! Please coe and see us this
Fall or Winter and enjoy one of Abigael’s gourmet meals. |
Up
and Coming Things You Want to Know About |
Halloween!
Speaking of off season, Halloween at Doe Bay is always an event.
It is on a Friday night this year so we will turn it in to a weekend
celebration!!!
Garlic Festival
The 3rd Annual Garlic Festival will be held on November 15. $50/person
gets you the chance to indulge in considerable decadence with a
mélange of heirloom and unique garlic-based and inspired
meals. Add $20 for a paired wine flight. Embrace the Stinking Root
with a roomful of like-minded fans. A portion of tonight’s
proceeds will go to support the island’s Farm-to-Cafeteria
program, helping to put local food in local schools.
Thanksgiving
An Island Thanksgiving $150 meal package and a 4-night stay gets
you a 25% discount on lodging. Arrive on November 26 to welcoming
tapas, enjoy two more days of brunches in the café, mix in
a Thanksgiving dinner. Add family. Mix well. Enjoy old and new friends.
Return to a more thankful existence on November 30.
New Year’s Eve – Sandman Returns
New Year’s at Doe Bay $100 party package and a 4-night stay
will get you a 25% discount on lodging. The festivities include
sumptuous and substantial New Year’s Eve appetizers, continues
with the musical performance of the unique Chris Sand (Sandman, the
Rappin Cowboy), peaks with a midnight toast, and sends you to
sleep with a Midnight Dessert Buffet. In the morning, start your
2009 with a lazy brunch. Stay for three more days to get a jump
on resolutions, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Go home and make the
world better.
Christmas at Doe Bay
We are designing our Christmas Holiday package now. Doe Bay is
the ideal place to celebrate the season, away from all the holiday
hustle. If you want a mellow holiday or wish to celebrate “not
celebrating” Christmas, Doe Bay may be right for you, your
family and friends. Please call us if you are interested in bringing
a group up during the Christmas break and we may design our plan
around your inclinations.

Missing
Cat and Other Mysteries |
|
This is our second attempt to find our cat and we are getting desperate,
so we are doubling the size of the reward!
If you have been coming to Doe Bay for over 30 years, like I have,
you remember the Lion. Do you have a photo of the lion? It would
really help!
It “disappeared” some years ago and I have been waiting
by the phone for a ransom demand. The FBI tells me the chances of
it still being alive are now remote.
So now, I reach out to all of you to help us figure out how to
replace it. Are you a carver or sculptor or do you know someone
who is? If so, write to me with your ideas.
A Final Mystery
What is the connection? Three seemingly unrelated photos:
On the left, a couple drinking lattes at the Doe Bay café;
enjoying the free wireless. He seems to be doing very little; one
could assume that he is taking a break; but from what? She on the
other hand, seems busy. Is she writing a book? In the middle we
see a gravestone, hidden in plain view in Seattle. An Italian died
at Fort Lawton? Is the year really 1944? Finally on the right, that
same gentleman, taking another break while his co-worker completes
work on the new compost bin system next to the Doe Bay Organic Garden.
Who are they? How are they connected? If you know, write me an e-mail:
Joe@DoeBay.com.
