In this Issue…

Dear Friends of Doe Bay,

This month I am thinking about Tolerance and Politics. What could be more appropriate for the issue which will be published just days before the US Elections? I should begin with a disclaimer. I intend to vote for Barack Obama, but I am tolerant of voters of all persuasions.

But... First things first!

ERRATTA - Did any of you notice that the October 2008 newsletter had the proud title September 2008? The first of you to write and convince me that you did notice the error, but didn’t want to point it out because it would hurt our feelings, will win the editor’s prize, a gift to be picked up at the Doe Bay store.

The Mystery Question Winner - We did have a winner of last month’s mystery question. The photos were of our close friends Jack & Leslie Hamman. The first accurate guess was from John Hassebroek who will be in to pick up his prize at the Doe Bay store later this year.

Back to our thoughts about tolerance. Doe Bay is a unique place. Because we have a clothing optional area, some would like us to be a naturist place. We aren't a nudist place, we are tolerant. Because we are a friendly and safe environment for people of various sexual preferences, we are encouraged to be a LGBT place. We aren't a gay place or a straight place, we are tolerant. A majority of our guests are Democrats. Should we become a Democratic place? No, we are tolerant of all viewpoints and political persuasions.

We allow pets, should we become a zoo? We serve fresh organic vegetables and seafood. Should we exclude carnivores? No we are a place of tolerance. You may eat Twinkies at Doe Bay (although you won't be able to buy them at the Doe Bay Store.)

At Doe Bay, we favor yoga and don't have televisions? Do we exclude people who are hooked on Deal or No Deal? No, we are so tolerant that we have free high speed wireless so you can get your TV fix on your laptop. Our PC users are tolerant of the Apple users. The Apple users are getting there. Don't you wish that more places were more like Doe Bay? Every year we welcome people from dozens of countries, including many from Canada. We are tolerant, eh?

We plan some day to build a place of worship or religious meditation for Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Protestants, Agnostics and Atheists, as well as anyone who is none of the above. We embrace diversity, not because it is politically correct, but because it enriches our lives.

Please go out and vote on Tuesday. Please come and visit us at Doe Bay this Fall. If we are doing our job, you will feel welcome!

Thank you and enjoy the rest of the newsletter.
- Joe

The Doe Bay General Store

General Store Goods General Store Goods General Store Goods

The Doe Bay General Store is best defined by what it is not. It is not Nordstrom’s, nor is it 7-11. It has some cool gifts from around the world and hopefully has the bare necessities you will need to enjoy your stay at Doe Bay. There are always basic foodstuffs with a strong prejudice toward organic fare. There are also sun glasses and rain slickers, shorts and sweatshirts. We are the only place to buy db clothing.

The Doe Bay Store is proud to feature the artwork and Jewelry of our friend and Seattle Artist, Irene Wood. Irene also designed the acclaimed First Annual dbFest 08 logo.

Volunteering at Doe Bay

WWOOF – USA
Doe Bay is pleased to be the newest WWOOF host site. We will be welcoming volunteers under the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms USA program. Our guest volunteers will stay at Doe Bay from three weeks to three months, receiving room and board in return for work performed on our gardens and grounds.

In some cases, we hope to allow WWOOF volunteers to experience the full circle of our Seed to Plate program by working in the Café serving the food which they helped grow. For more information, see the WWOOF site at WWOOF USA Web Site, the Volunteering at Doe Bay page and/or write to me – Joe@DoeBay.com.

The Community Service Learning Program
Doe Bay recently hosted it’s first group under the new CSLP program. Under this program groups of 5 to 15 people come to Doe Bay to live learn and work together. This is available to experienced gardeners or any group who wants to learn about organic gardens in one of the most beautiful place in the world. Doe Bay Resort and Retreat offers these groups free or deeply discounted accommodations as well as access to all the amenities of Doe Bay.

On the weekend of September 12, 13 and 14, a dozen students from Shoreline Community College arrived and went to work in the Doe Bay Organic garden. It was judged by all to be a tremendous success. Please see the Facebook Doe Bay Resort's Service-Learning Program Group for more information. If you have a group interested in participating in this unique program, please write an e-mail to me: Joe@DoeBay.com.

Christmas at Doe Bay

We are designing our Christmas Holiday package now. Doe Bay is the ideal place to celebrate the season, away from all the holiday hustle. If you want a mellow holiday or wish to celebrate “not celebrating” Christmas, Doe Bay may be right for you, your family and friends. Please call us if you are interested in bringing a group up during the Christmas break and we may design our plan around your inclinations.

Our November Mystery

Mystery Car

Prizes will be awarded… whose car is this anyway? Make model?

Here’s a little hint - The owner of this vehicle was kind enough to act as an unpaid consultant for our Doe Bay store. He had some great ideas. His last gig was also in retail. He was a CEO of a company with over 15,000 stores.

A Final Mystery

Who are these boys playing music at Doe Bay and then eating at the Doe Bay Café? Do they look lost?

Hint – Benson and Judy (pictured at lower right of photo on the left worked on an important project together involving something pouring from the sky). Who are they? How are they connected? If you know, write me an e-mail: Joe@DoeBay.com.
