The First Annual Doe
Bay Fireworks Extravaganza
........
canceled!
If you feel the need for a bunch
of noise and the sweet smell of acrid smoke where fresh air and
quiet used to be, Doe Bay won't work for you this year... We will
be left with fresh air, a million stars and a hillarious parade.
There are still some camping sites left for the weekend
of the 4th, so call us now for a reservation (360) 376-2291.
There might even be a cabin or two. Hardcore fireworks lovers who
are already drafting e-mails to chastise me about my new age, tragically
hip, bad attitude about a great American tradition of blowing stuff
up, first please watch this... Screaming
Joe's Doe Bay Fireworks.

Baseball

The Doe Bay Softball Team has been
dominating in terms of supportive fans. Our cheer squad is shown
below demonstrating the dangerous, but always entertaining, "Tower
of Chear" cheer. We are pleased to confirm that no one was
hurt and they had a nearly perfect dismount. You nailed it, girls!

Football (or Soccer)
Doe Bay at the World Cup

By now you have heard the story
of the Dutch girls arrested for guerrilla marketing for stripping
down to orange miniskirts and tops at a first round game. They were
arrested for promoting a beer which was not an official FIFA
sponsor, which is apparently a crime in South Africa. Well by that
standard, Doe Bay, and more specifically Doe
Bay Fest, pulled of a real coup. Look at the photo below
of Landon Donovan and look carefully at his left
wrist. That's right. For an undisclosed sum, Landon who is often
rumored as a possible coach of the Doe Bay soccer team, had a tattoo
of the Doe Bay Fest Logo placed on his arm and then regularly displayed
that arm during throw-ins. Thanks LD!

Orcas School
Kids Visit Doe Bay Garden
=
18 students from Orcas Island
School came to the garden on a field trip to connect their
farm-to-cafeteria learning. This is the same school that the Doe
Bay Cafe's Executive Chef Abigael was the guest
chef for back in the end of March as part of the same program. The
teacher, Anne Ford, selected two topics that she
was interested in having her class study. They were basic plant
morphology (taught without ever using the word "morphology",
since they are 2nd graders) and beneficial garden/soil organisms.
They were first given a lesson on the topic, and then they were
broken up into activities that were led by Peter and the WWOOFers
that corresponded to the different parts of their lesson. They got
to look at flowers and identify the parts, they learned how plants
have special adaptations that help them survive, and were able to
dig their hands in the dirt and dig for potaotes or "modified
stems" as they were told. For the beneficial organisms they
were also divided into groups to dig in the dirt to look for critters
(one group counted 28 worms in a few shovelfuls of compost!) under
a magnifying glass and were taught how to build a Berlese funnel
to see the even tinier ones. They were really excited to be there
and it seems like they made a lot of connections. A few days later
we recieved the cutest (and informative!) thank you cards from them
that will be hanging around by the Doe Bay Garden,
Cafe, and store, so check them out next time you are there!

Thanks for Saying Thanks!

This wasn't supposed to be a regular column heading, but again at
breakfast last Friday, this very sweet guest came up and introduced
herself and told a story about romance blooming at Doe Bay under
the moonlight over a decade ago! It is still working and she still
loves Doe Bay and her husband!
