“'Rock' [music]. . . is the expression of elemental passions, and at rock festivals it assumes a cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship. People are, so to speak, released from themselves by the experience of being part of a crowd and by the emotional shock of rhythm, noise, and special lighting effects. However, in the ecstasy of having all their defenses torn down, the participants sink, as it were, beneath the elemental force of the universe.”

~Pope Benedict XVI

Doe Bay Fest is Just Days Away

The festival this year will be such a big deal that it is hard not to feature it in the newsletter. I will say just 3 things:

1.) MORE INFORMATION - You can find out a bit more, including schedules and band information and by going to DoeBayFest.com.

2.) SOLD OUT (except Volunteers) Doe Bay Fest sold out in ten days in early May. Thank you to all who are coming and I apologize to those who have been calling and for whom we have no space. If you are anxious to come to the festival and are responsible (and can prove it) and would like to volunteer, there may be a couple volunteer openings. Please e-mail me.

3.) THE LAST CABIN & TICKETS - We have held one cabin package for all the loyal readers of this newsletter (Actually, we got it through a fluke cancellation.) It is Cypress, which is the best cabin on the property and sleeps six people in three bedrooms and possibly two more on a futon. The package includes the cabin for Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Sunday checkout. (We will throw in Wednesday night as well, if you want to get a jump on things.) It includes the last 6 tickets to the festival and 6 Doe Bay Fest T-shirts. The price is $1200. which is only $400 per couple... for music, shelter and clothing! Please write to Joe@DoeBay.com if you would like this last minute special.

One more thing - Did you read the quote at the top of the newsletter? I try to find a timely quote for each newsletter and, since we are putting on a rock festival this week, that was my subject of choice. I don't want to offend any Catholics since I am one, but is that quote whack or what?

Life After Doe Bay Fest

Just One Week later on Friday Aug 20th @ 6pm

Doe Bay Cafe will host Carolyn Cruso on the patio with HAPPY HOUR Cocktails from 5 to 7pm. For two decades Carolyn Cruso has been making a name for herself as a multi-instrumentalist, writing and performing adventurous and lyrical pieces on the hammered dulcimer and various flutes. More recently she expanded her musical attention to the singer/songwriting genre and has been delighting audiences around the nation ever since with her expressive voice, elegant melodies, fine guitar playing and poetic lyrics. As a performer Cruso weaves a web with a myriad of instruments, diverse styles, subtle nuances and vivid images. Seattles Victory Music describes her music as "a hypnotic and alluring blend of folk, pop and jazz." This west coast tour finds Cruso celebrating the release of her new songwriter CD, Have You Ever which people are lauding as sophisticated, intimate, rich and intelligent. Visit her web site at www.carolyncruso.com

Doe Bay gets an ATM

Ok... this is not a photo of our ATM, but it is similar. Since I was just in Russia, this photo of a Russian ATM with the message "Your Windows Version must be activated in 7 days. Do you want to activate now?" was amusing to me. It was not as amusing as the ATM Priceless image (you can google it), but that one was also tasteless, even for my extremely low standards.

This new money printing machine is located in the Doe Bay Cafe and we hope you find it useful.

I will be in Doe Bay most of August so please introduce yourself. Thanks for reading and, as always, please send me your thoughts!

Dos Vadanya !

Thanks Again for Saying Thanks!
As I said in last month's letter, this wasn't supposed to be a regular column but, since owning Doe Bay is still an expensive hobby, I must say the nice things we hear are worth the price of admission! I received the following nice e-mail:

Dear Friend at Doe Bay,

Thank you all for a wonderful time at Doe Bay, one of our very favorite places and an annual tradition for us. Our time there is always so enjoyable but this year we certainly "lucked out"! We made our reservations for this week at Orca Yurt back in March (I think) not knowing that we would also be treated to Shakespeare and Sea Collective during that time. Plus we cut ten degrees off of the Seattle heat wave. Talk about perfect timing!

Thanks again and see you next year (if not sooner!)

Doe Bay Fest the 13th! ---- Sold Out

The Logos are a big part of Doe Bay Fest. We have declared the logo above to be the perennial logo for every festival and then we produce an annual logo. These have been designed for us by Northwest Artist Irene Wood. See some of Irene's paintings below in the Doe Bay Art Gallery.

As to the logo below, I am curious how you see it capturing Doe Bay Fest? Please write to me, Joe@DoeBay.com.

Again, if you are getting excited about the festival music, please, right now, go to DoeBayFest.com and see the musician's gallery!

Shakespeare Was a HIT at Doe Bay!

It was a perfect night for theater under the Stars:

Above are some warmups on the stage (We don't include a performance photos because of the inclusion of Equity actors.) Below is a photo of a happy crowd:

Consider Bringing your favorite theater company to Doe Bay. We have the stage ... just add talent!

Moorage at Doe Bay - No Dock, but we have a Buoy!

We have had many boaters ask us about moorage at Doe Bay. There is a good anchorage directly in front of the resort. (Reminder to Skippers - Otter Cove goes nearly dry on low tides.) Frogger - seen at right, dropped a brand new Mooring Buoy in front of Doe Bay. It is a private buoy but when I am not using it, perhaps you could be. Contact our front desk to inquire.

How to get to Doe Bay

Take the Foot Ferry to Doe Bay!

Getting to Doe Bay can be half the fun. Consider the foot ferry from Island Express, directly to our beach. Call us for details.

The ferry schedule includes fewer sailings in the Winter and Spring, but they are almost never full, so come on up!

Another option is flying on Kenmore Air out of Seattle. You can consider half of the cost as the amount you would spend just to sightsee in a seaplane.

If possible, come for an extra day. I promise the extra day is always the best!

The Doe Bay Art Gallery – One nice thing about being such a unique place is that some great artists are willing and even anxious to display their work at Doe Bay. The café now has regular installations of 5 to 20 paintings or other works. The Zegers show is worth the trip to Doe Bay just to see.

In addition to the Zeger works, we just hung "The Doe Bay Fest Trilogy". I commissioned the designer of our Doe Bay Fest logos to paint three original works based on the three logos. In case you won't get a chance to see them at Doe Bay, I will include them here. (They are not for sale.)
