| It
may be wishful thinking on my part, but I am going to assume that
you have missed receiving a newsletter in the last two months. Mea
Culpa! There is a great deal of news to report, as you will see
below, and I have some pretty good excuses.
Afghanistan - The holiday season in December is always
a busy time. I had scheduled myself with little room to spare. Then
I received some good news. My security clearance to go to Afghanistan
came through.
..

It was my first return to the country
in more than 35 years, which, for me, was a dream come true. It
was an opportunity to give back to a country and the people who
were so kind and generous to me in the seventies. I won’t
expand further here, but if you are interested I am including a
link to some stories and photos from my travels. http://www.joebrotherton.blogspot.com/
Broken Bones - Having safely navigated a fairly
dangerous locale, I returned to the USA and managed to dislocate
and fracture my elbow in the safety of my own Seattle home. I am
mending now from my second repairing surgery. That is excuse number
two for my tardiness.

A brief review of recent Doe Bay events:
Scrabble World Championship - a major scrabble tournament
was recently held at Doe Bay. Although it was not recognized by
any of the official scrabble tournament organizations, it was by
far, the most legitimate tournament this side of Moran State Park.
Pictured here is our maintenance manager and facilities chief Keith
Graham. He can't get a consonant to save his life.

New Years Eve -
Doe Bay welcomed 2011 in style.

If you missed joining us at Doe Bay for new years
eve this year, don’t let that happen again. We had a great
party with champagne and spirits from the Doe Bay Bar, food by the
inimitable Abigael and music provided by the Dust Bunnies and Sandman,
the Rappin Cowboy.

I don't think anyone said, "Say ahh."

This guest fell asleep at 10 but stayed for the
toast!
We drank danced and toasted midnight
in the Doe Bay Cafe.... And then, as has become the tradition, Chris
Sand performed cowboy rap and cowboy poetry around the blazing campfire
until the early hours.

Valentine's Day
The Love Is In The Food

The Doe Bay café put on a Valentine’s
Day dinner that came with the guarantee that your relationship would
be extended by at least one year as a direct result of eating this
one great meal. Again, mark your calendar for Valentine’s
Day at Doe Bay in 2012. The best way I can describe the dinner is
to share with you the following comment which we received by e-mail
the next day:
Congratulations
on a fantastic dinner and wine pairing.
Our
friends that joined us have lived on Orcas for many years and experienced
every chef of any note that has had a restaurant. Their comment
was "we have lived here for 14 years and that is the best meal
we have ever had on Orcas".
Tye
Thank you Tye, for sharing those
comments. Please introduce yourself to me on your next visit. I
often hear from guests that Doe Bay is a magical place. I do know
that magic happens in the Doe Bay Cafe kitchen on a regular basis.
Abigael Burrell, our executive chef has put together a team of people,
well trained and guided by a philosophy of producing excellent meals
using the freshest of ingredients. Of course, now nearly every restaurant
says the same thing. However, at the Doe Bay Café, you'll
often see Abigael or some of her other chefs carrying freshly harvested
produce from the Doe Bay Garden, a couple hundred yards away. It
is more of a rule than an exception that the vegetables you eat
at the Doe Bay Cafe were in the ground within the last 24 hours.
Likewise, our fish is the freshest local seafood available.

Doe Bay Keeps Getting Press...
Thank you!!
Others are noticing,
but we need your help - Please watch for the upcoming issue of the
magazine, Bellingham Alive. The issue is all about
Northwest Food and we understand that there will be some comments
about the Doe Bay Cafe. http://bellinghamalive.com/
. We do almost no traditional advertising, so we are always looking
for ways to get the word out about what we're doing at Doe Bay.
If you publish reviews or write a blog and you mention Doe Bay,
please send me the link so that
I might include it in a future newsletter. You might even go so
far as to contact your favorite newspaper and encourage them to
take a look at Doe Bay.

Events at Doe Bay are so
much fun. Read the column to the right and plan a visit. I happen
to know that members of Doe Bay Fest bands will be up as guests
on two weekends in March. You never know, but I wouldn't be surprised
to see The Solvents or CJ Boyd invite a guest up from the audience
to perform a number or two.
As always, watch our Event Calendar
on our website!

INTRODUCING
River & Shandra

On-site
Resident Managers -
On your next visit, please introduce yourself to our new resident
managers, River and Shandra Augenstein . We are very excited to
welcome them to Doe Bay where they are the perfect fit. They come
to this job from Indralaya and the ethic which they developed there
is completely consistent with our approach at Doe Bay. Our general
manager, Jami Mitchell said of River and Shandra “from the
moment they arrived on the property they were part of the Doe Bay
community.“
I have asked them to share their
thoughts about Doe Bay from an insider's perspective in the next
newsletter. Please watch for that.
And they brought some friends... Our newest additions
CHICKENS

Doe Bay Chickens - we
are very pleased to introduce you to the newest members of the doe
bay community. These are our chickens. Here is a trivia question
for you. Before the chickens, what was the latest livestock that
we raised at doe bay? Please send me your answer.

Doe Bay Fest 2011
the Full Moon Festival!!

We can't deny it
any longer. Our secret little music festival has become one of the
most popular events in the Northwest each summer. Virtually everyone
who attended Doe Bay Fest 2010 has described it as a high point
of their summer and of the entire year. Some, who are given to hyperbole,
described it as the best time of their lives. One of the secrets
of Doe Bay Fest is that we keep it small. For example, for every
performing artist at Doe Bay Fest, there are about five festival
guests. It is not unusual to see a Doe Bay Fest band performing
and to have some of the top musicians in the northwest in the front
row watching singing and dancing.

We will be announcing
the band's for this year's festival on June 2nd. You will not be
disappointed. The atmosphere at Doe Bay Fest has been so much fun
for the bands that we are overwhelmed with submissions from our
favorite musicians.
Doe Bay fest will sell out. We know that many of you are anxious
about getting tickets. We anticipate opening sales on brown paper
tickets on May 1. These will be packages which include two, three
or four tickets and a festival camping site. In addition, we will
be selling ticket packages which include reserved campsites and
or other accommodations along with festival tickets. As promised,
guests who purchased gift certificates for Doe Bay clothing items
are on the priority list. We will contact them in March. As of the
1st of April, we will begin selling packages and tickets, in person
only, at the Doe Bay front desk. Watch this newsletter and the Doe
Bay Fest Facebook page for updates. Please do not write or call.
More information will be published soon.

We are looking forward to
another great year at Doe Bay! Please introduce yourself to me when
you come to Doe Bay. I eat in the cafe virtually every night. See
you there.
